I'll confess: I didn't know about this Gygax fellow until the blogger-nets erupted with elegies.
See, I'm a terrible geek, and have never played a game of D&D in my life. Oh, I've had opportunity to, but by this point my mental conception of the learning curve is rather steep. Plus, the ratio of perceived mental-input to percieved mental gain/output of fun is rather low. In my opinion.
I don't understand it. I have a cursory knowledge of stats and such, but mostly this comes by way of RPG video games. Mostly Final Fantasy. The idea is the same, but I do tire of these games rather quickly; I have yet to finish a FF game yet (it doesn't help that my FF XII disc is scratched). I prefer adventure games. Zelda. Okami. Metroid.
Oh, friends have tried to get me involved, but I never have. Often I have more pressing things. Even more often, I'd rather sit and read — or better yet write and draw comics — than play. If I do want to play, I'll play a video game. If I want a game with friends, card games are more the adequate, and the setup time is nil; the game can then be spontaneous.
Plus, I think I'm rather biased against the portrayal of the dragon species in that game, too. “That's not how dragons do things,” would probably be common from me.
I do think I'd rather be poking around in the guts of a computer or playing with fonts than D&D actually.
And by this point, I doubt I'll ever get into it.
